When I was fifteen, sixteen when I really started to play the guitar

I definitely wanted to become a musician

It was almost impossible because the dream was so big

That I didn't see any chance because I was living in a little town, I was studying.

And when I finally broke away from school and became a musician

I thought "well now I may have a little bit of a chance"

Because all i really wanted to do is music and not only play music

But compose music.

At that time, in Germany, in 69-70, they had already discotheques
So I would take my car, would go to a discotheque and sing maybe 30 minutes
I think I had about 7-8 songs. I would partially sleep in the car
Because i didn't want to drive home and that help me for about almost 2 years
To survive. In the beginning, I wanted to do a album with the sound of the 50s, the sound of the 60s, of the 70s and then have a sound of the future.
And I said: "Wait a second?
I know the synthesizer, why don't I use the synthesizer which is the sound of the future." And I didn't have any idea what to do but I knew I needed a click so we put a click on the 24 track which then was synched to the moog modular. I knew that it could be a sound of the future but I didn't realise how much impact it would be.

My name is Giovanni Giorgio, but everybody calls me Giorgio.

Once you free your mind about a concept of harmony and music being correct, you can do whatever you want. So nobody told me what to do, and there was no preconception of what to do.

첫 번째로 공개된 Giorgio Moroder와의 인터뷰

Giorgio Moroder는 70~80년대 유행했던 신스팝(Synthpop)의 선두주자로서 신시사이저를 이용해 음악계의 신세계를 열어갔던 음악가입니다. 도너 서머(Donna Summer)의 작품들, 영화「Midnight Express」(1978)의 주제곡 등으로 많이 알려졌고, 「Midnight Express」, 영화「Flashdance」(1983), 영화「Top Gun」(1986)의 주제곡으로 총 3번의 아카데미 상을 수상한 전자음악계의 거장입니다.

솔직히 이 정도로도 생소하신 분들이 많으실 수도 있는데, 우리에게는 이 한 곡으로 알게 모르게 상당히 친숙한 분입니다. 바로 '88 서울올림픽 주제가인 '손에 손잡고(Hand in Hand)'를 작곡한 분입니다.

들을 때마다 정말 희대의 명곡이라는 생각이 듭니다. 여러 의미에서 냉전 해체의 상징이 된 역사적인 올림픽과 그에 걸맞는 가사와 음악은 언제 들어도 가슴을 뭉클하게 만드네요.

서론이 조금 길었는데, 이 곡은 조르조 모로데르가 음악가로서의 삶을 읊조리는 것에 신시사이저음이 잘 가미되어 만들어졌습니다. 이 곡을 듣고 있노라면 마치 옆에서 할아버지가 소싯적 영웅담을 이야기해주시는 듯한 느낌을 받습니다.

Daft Punk는 인터뷰에서 이 트랙을 '음악적 자유에 대한 은유(une métaphore sur la liberté musicale)'라고 표현했습니다. 다펑이 추구해온 여러 분야, 여러 의미에서 장벽(les barrières)을 허무는 작업의 상징이 되는 것이 바로 이 곡이라고 할 수 있겠습니다. 그래서 조르조와의 인터뷰를 활용하고, 60~70년대에 쓰이던 소리를 그대로 활용해서 다펑만의 스타일로 곡을 만들어냈습니다.
